Pinehurst No. 2
Pinehurst No. 2, the centerpiece of Pinehurst Resort, remains one of the world’s most celebrated golf courses. It has served as the site of more single golf championships than any course in America and hosted back-to-back U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open Championships for the first time in 2014. The U.S. Open will return in 2024.
Opened in 1907, No. 2 was designed by Donald Ross, who called it “the fairest test of championship golf I have ever designed.” Ross was associated with the course for nearly a half-century, improving the course continually until his death in 1948. No. 2 is best known for its crowned, undulating greens, which are some of the most complex and widely hailed in the world. Ross believed in providing golfers with strategic choices, and Pinehurst No. 2 was intended to epitomize that philosophy.
In February of 2010, the design firm of Bill Coore & Ben Crenshaw began to restore the natural and strategic characteristics that were the essence of Ross’s original design. The project included the removal of about 35 acres of turf and the reintroduction of hardpan, natural bunker edges and native wire grasses. Today, you are playing the restored course as originally envisioned.
Pinehurst No. 8
New to the Acura College Alumni Team Championship this year is Pinehurst’s Centennial Course - Pinehurst No. 8.
Building a new course grand enough to celebrate Pinehurst’s first 100 years might intimidate some architects, but Tom Fazio took on the assignment with gusto. No. 8 – which opened in 1996 – combines classic Donald Ross concepts with the whimsical snarls that have become Fazio’s calling card. Fazio took full advantage of the 420 acres of rolling terrain and natural wetlands to fashion a course that’s visually enthralling and challenging yet fun to play; it’s a nod to No. 2, but hardly a replication.
Many feel No. 8 synthesizes all the elements of the Pinehurst golf experience into one layout. This championship track has twice been home to the PGA Club Pro Championship. Just a short drive from the main club, the Pinehurst spirit is quite alive at No. 8, which will serve as the companion course for the 2019 Men’s U.S. Amateur Championship.
Each player will play 18 holes on Pinehurst No. 2 and 18 holes on Pinehurst No. 8
Tees: Assigned tees based on established National Championship yardages. Ladies will play from the red tees, and men will play from a yardage that averages between blue and white tees. Senior players ages 65 or older will play from the green tees. Note: There will be scorers on each hole.
Net Division: 36-hole, Team Stroke Play Tournament (2 Best Ball of 4 Net). Teams are comprised of four players. Each player on a team will play his or her own golf ball until holed. The aggregate of the lowest two NET scores of the team will serve as the score for the hole. This process will be continued for the entire round. Players will receive 80% of their course handicap, calculated based on their current USGA committee. In order to place in the Net Division, handicaps must be verified, either via GHIN number, or a signed affidavit from a club professional. Established USGA handicap or verified handicap average will be verified by October 17, 2017
Gross Division: 36-hole, Team Stroke Play Tournament (2 Best Ball of 4 Gross). Teams are comprised of four players. Each player on a team will play his or her own golf ball until holed. The aggregate of the lowest two gross scores of the team will serve as the score for the hole. This process will be continued for the entire round.
Bracket Division: The Bracket Division will be played similar to the NCAA Basketball Championship, which includes a bracket system leading to one National Championship Team. A blind draw will be held prior to the first round, pairing the Alumni Teams into one of two division brackets. One division will play No. 2 the first day, and the other will play No. 8 the first day. The winning teams will advance to the next round for each nine holes played in the Championship. Each “round” will be based on gross score.
Following the final tournament round, the four remaining teams will play in a semi-final sudden-death playoff followed by the two remaining teams playing in a sudden-death final playoff for the National Championship title. The sudden-death playoffs will be a 4-Man, 3 Hole Shootout on Pinehurst’s new Short Course.
The Acura Cup- Presented to the winning National College Alumni Team in each division. This perpetual trophy will be permanently displayed at Pinehurst Resort. The players’ name and represented university will be engraved on the trophy.
Team Trophies- Putterboy trophies will be presented to the top four scoring National College Alumni Teams in the Net and Gross Divisions. Putterboy trophies will be presented to the National Championship Team and Runner-up in the Bracket Division. The Putterboy trophies are unique in the fact that they are only awarded to Major Tournament Champions at Pinehurst.
Hole-in-One- Acura will sponsor a Hole-in-One competition on both course during both days of the National Championship. Acura will provide a one-year lease for a 2017 Acura MDX for the first Hole-in-One scored on the 17th hole of Pinehurst No. 2 and 4th hole of Pinehurst No. 4 Additional Hole-in-One prizes will be provided by the Old Course Experience, Pinehurst Resort, and Titleist for any subsequent Holes-in-One scored on the remaining par 3 holes on Pinehurst No. 2 and Pinehurst No. 4.
Proximity Prizes- Awarded for Closest-to-the-Hole on all par 3s on Pinehurst No. 2 and Pinehurst No. 4 during both days of the National Championship. (Eight on each day)
Acura Skills Competition- Prizes will be awarded for the Acura Skills Competition individual events. Acura will provide a one year lease for a 2017 Acura TLX as a grand prize for the Putting Contest. Participants who qualify by making a shorter putt will have a chance to sink a long putt to win.
